The history of the national day is completely chaotic. During Austro-Hungarian Monarchy after the French example, they decided to create a national day: The day of St István (the first Hungarian king, who -in fact- was a tipical dictator). After the first world war with the strengthening of nacionalism, they started to pay more attention to this day (fireworks, etc.). In the communist era it became day of the New Bread. Nowdays we just celebrate the 20th of August...
